Crowd control fences are steel barriers used for securing lines and crowds at high-traffic gatherings, sporting events, street festivals and protests. Ostensibly created for the purpose of maintaining order. Can these forms be repurposed in a way which subverts or negates their intended usage? When is a fence a ladder? is a recreation of a crowd control fence fabricated from grey reflective nylon fabric and stuffing. Turning the fence vertically and suspending it from the ceiling the bars emulate the rungs of a ladder. As you move around the work, the light catches the reflective details revealing a camouflage pattern. For a sharper look, take a picture of the fence with your flash on.
